H is for herbs. Widely used as flavouring for dishes, herbs are also used in cures for ailments and are great plants to have in the garden as they create such wonderful aromas, especially if you brush past them.
H is also for hamburger, best made from fresh, although most people eat hamburgers from the freezer at home. They are actually quite simple to make and are so much more tasty when made from fresh.
Steps for cooking hamburgers:
- Just take a good quality minced beef, finely chopped onion, some crushed garlic if desired, a drop of Worcestershire sauce and the same of tabasco, some chopped parsley, breadcrumbs (you can make these in a blender from yesterday’s leftover bread), salt and pepper, and a whisked egg.
- Place all the ingredients into a bowl and mix them together with your hands until they are blended evenly.
- Break the mixture into palm sized balls and press them into deep patties.
- Place them on a tray and cover with cling film, then leave them in the fridge for a few hours.
- These are great to make in the morning for your tea.
- When they are chilled fry in a little oil until the meat is cooked right through, then serve in buns with salad and relish, or serve them out of the bun with chips.
Words beginning with H that might not be associated with food and cooking include:
hash, a fried dish of pre-cooked meat with onions and potato,
hawthorn, a roadside hedgerow the berries can be used to make a jelly served with meat or cheese,
hedgehog, often eaten by gypsies who roll the animal in clay and then bake it. When cooked the clay is removed taking the spines with it, and
horse, not eaten in Britain but is eaten in other european countries.
